I wrote this little cassette ditty in 1979 for Liz Piccione.
I met Liz at the Lambs Club - a famous building on W. 44th St. purchased by the Church of the Nazarene that rented out rooms to Christian musicians and artists as part of their mission to Times Square. Before it was sold to the Nazarene church, it was an off Broadway theater and residence to many famous celebs - John Barrymore, Irving Berlin, Cecil B. DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, John Wayne, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Fred Astair and many more. Liz was the first person to officially welcome me and introduce me to the Lambs community. My life was never to be the same after that - I felt like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, realizing I "wasn't in Kansas anymore".
I wound up temporarily living there, actually being assigned a room that was once actually rented to Fred Astaire and later on, Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers! (Believe it or not, I sometimes still received Phil Everly’s junk mail while still there!) Anyway, by the time I got there, time had taken its toll - the rooms were terribly run down and neglected. I took a picture of my room which you can see here.
I consider my “Lambs” days among the most formative, fun times of my life. Thank you again Liz for being so instrumental in those early days and your friendship. I still haven’t forgotten the many episodes of life back then: you welcoming me to the Lambs and introducing me to the fellow “Lambees”, going to see Mose Allison together at the Village Vanguard, you getting my guitar out of hock and giving me your used guitar case (which I still have and use), your visit to Buffalo meeting my crazy family, the terrific Christian fellowship we enjoyed, and a host of other incredible times together. Time and distance won’t change the special place you hold in my heart Liz. I always include you in my prayers when I find myself reminiscing about those amazing days. :-)
